Sir Walter Raleigh in Dorset
Over the last few days I’ve been researching an Elizabethan home in the Dorset countryside. I also had the great privilige of visiting the house and getting the chance to have a good look around.
Here is an old illustration (date unknown):

The manor dates back to the 11th century (and most likely before) as it appears listed in the Domesday Book in 1086. The manor was requisitioned by the Crown during the late 16th century and then Elizabeth I gave it to one of her favourite courtiers, Sir Walter Raleigh. However, Raleigh didn’t have it long. He sold the manor and lordship to Sir Robert Mellor in 1600 and it was Mellor who initiated the building of a new house.
I managed to uncover a few essential documents in the local history centre – including the original sales document between Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Robert Meller. Here is a glimpse of Sir Walter Raleigh’s signature and seal:

…and a view of the deed

I am still yet to complete the full history – with a number of details to hunt down – but I will be sure to upload it here soon!
