Colebrooke Row – address of choice in Islington
There has recently been quite a lot of discussion about a particular street in North London due to one of its residents – the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson. Mr. Johnson has been causing a bit of a stir with other local residents, firstly with his plans for bicycle stands in the street and most recently because of a shed on his back patio that didn’t have the appropriate planning permission. However, despite the recent activity of the mayor, Colebrooke Row in Islington is one of the most picturesque Georgian rows in London and subsequently one of the most sought after addresses.
I recently highlighted Colebrooke Row in my blog for Country Life - House Historian blog
Colebrooke Row is known for its ornate Georgian terraced rows, but in the 18th century it was the path of the New River and surrounded by fields. Greenwoods map from 1830 shows the newly built homes with the river still running down the centre of the street (top left corner) with much of the remaining area covered in fields.
